When you enable encrypted mode, BalansIQ derives your unlock key locally and encrypts supported sensitive content before it reaches our servers. We store ciphertext plus wrapped key material, not your plaintext unlock secret.
Local Key Derivation
Your device derives a 256-bit master key with PBKDF2-SHA256 and a user-specific salt.
Client-Side Encryption
Supported protected payloads are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before upload, with IV and auth tag.
Recovery By Design
The key is wrapped with your unlock secret and recovery key. Lose both, and even we cannot recover it.
